Lower Yellowstone Ranch

Listing Price: $1,950,000

The Lower Yellowstone Ranch is located in Reed Point, Montana, in Sweet Grass County. The community of Reed Point, with a population of approximately 200 residents, offers small town amenities with stunning views of two mountain ranges. This peaceful town is bordered by the Yellowstone River to the north and is only 62 miles west of Billings. With fine dining, shopping, a university, busy business district, quiet neighborhoods, cultural activities and a commercial airport, Billings offers something for the entire family.

Surrounded by the Crazy and Beartooth Mountains on three sides, Sweet Grass County provides the rugged setting for which Montana is known. Rich in western culture, these traditions are still alive today with historical attractions and local events that add flair to the area.

These 195 acres feature verdant pastures that border ¾ of the famous Yellowstone River. Cottonwood trees contrast the rolling unimproved lands that are home to a small sheep herd. The Beartooth Mountains dominate the southern skies while the Crazy Mountains provide northern views from the ranch. With wide open spaces and incredible river frontage, this area would be ideal for an equestrian property, small farming operation or recreational retreat.

This section of the Yellowstone is often forgotten by anglers but offers long, deep holes and riffles. Healthy populations of brown trout as well as rainbows and cutthroats are found lurking in this section of the river. The longest undammed, free-flowing river in the Lower 48 states, The Yellowstone offers a variety of options for the fly-fisher. Warm water species begin to emerge in large numbers between Reed Point and Billings. The Yellowstone River, internationally known as one of the premier trout waters in the United States, is best fished from a boat due to its fast currents and depth. However, it can be an exciting experience for any wade angler.

Additional exceptional angling can be found on the nearby Boulder and Stillwater Rivers. The Boulder River is a blue-ribbon trout stream with healthy populations of rainbow, cutthroat, brook and brown trout. It provides more than 50 miles of some of the finest trout fishing in the state. Appropriately named, the Boulder River’s bed is lined with football sized boulders through its crystal clear waters. The upper river holds nice populations of rainbow with a good mix of rainbow and brown trout in the lower sections. Ideal for wade fishing, one can also float the river in early season. The Stillwater River is an extremely beautiful and wild river that has less fishing pressure than the Yellowstone. Anglers have the opportunity to search for rainbows, browns and cutthroat trout in one of the state’s most scenic valleys.

This region of Montana is home to a variety of wildlife.  In addition to large numbers of Whitetail deer and turkey, the Lower Yellowstone Ranch is also home to fox, coyote, Mule deer, waterfowl and the occasional Hungarian Partridge.
