Iowa Farm Restoration Burn

Each spring on the Prairie Song Farm, the current owner oversees a prescribed burn on the property, a necessity to ensure the prairie savanna remains healthy and strong as well as remove unwanted non-native plants. Since 2003 and the inception of this restoration project, numerous rare species of plants have re-emerged after decades of dormancy. This exceptional ecosystem not only supports numerous rare plant species but also a thriving community of birds with over 137 species identified on the property.

Prairie Song Farm is comprised of 95.7 acres of which approximately 48 acres are located along the creeks and today resemble the tallgrass prairies witnessed by the first settlers. The remaining acreage rises into the oak tree-covered hillsides known as oak savannas. Prairie Song Farm is the only land in the Driftless Area with 3 recognized trout streams in the states of Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. Waterloo, Brook and Duck Creeks all converge on the property providing over a mile of private, year round spring creek fishing.

Prairie Song Farm is an ideal sporting ranch, offering an intimate fishing experience on over a mile of private spring creek, access to some of the Nation’s best whitetail deer hunting all within a revitalized and thriving rare oak savanna ecosystem.

The abundant wildlife of Rome Hill Ranch adds magnificent value to the overall ranch experience. Elk hunting is tremendous with the average herd ranging from 300 to 800 elk. In 2010, it is said that a game warden counted upwards of 1,200 elk on the ranch. The genetics of the herd coupled with the prime habitat of the ranch provide the ideal situation for large bull elk. Hunting has been managed and patrolled by 2 outfitters in the past to ensure quality animals. In 2011, a heavy 7×7 bull was taken by a local high school student. Take a look at a few of these recent trophy shots and see for yourself the rewards of elk hunting on the Rome Hill Ranch.

New Listing Coming Soon! – Prairie Song Farm, Iowa

By: Tate Jarry, Broker

If you are like me, an avid fly fisherman who often plans a seasonal trip to a destination trout fishery, I would venture to guess that Iowa is not on your short list of states to spend time wetting a line. It certainly didn’t make my list unless we are talking about fly fishing with a 10-weight for musky. A recent visit to the northeast corner of the state and a 2-day fishing experience on the spring creeks of Prairie Song Farm have changed my opinion of the fly fishing opportunities found in the Midwest as well as my list of destination trout fisheries.

Here are a few pictures of my recent trip and depiction of the fishery located on Prairie Song Farm.

Prairie Song Farm is a true spring creek resource with over a mile of fishable water on 3 separate spring creeks, all of which are easily waded. Undercut banks and large deep runs provide ample cover for the dense population of browns, rainbow and brook trout that thrive in the insect-rich, limestone creek bottoms. In 2 days, my guide and I conservatively landed over 100 fish – all on top water – with various patterns ranging from tricos, caddis to larger terrestrial patterns like the chubby Chernobyl ant, a popular western fly pattern. In all, the fish ranged greatly in size with the average fish size in the 14”range, however a good number that were pushing 20”. A recent fish shocking survey conducted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, offered an estimate of 4,500 fish per mile and a brown trout that was tapped at 23” long on the property.

As a Broker with Live Water Properties for over 10 years, my focus is primarily on properties that lie within the Rocky Mountains and more specifically within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, which contains large numbers of cold water fisheries and numerous “blue ribbon” trout streams. Rarely do I consider listing a property outside of these parameters, however I believe Prairie Song Farm to be the exception.

Details of this property will be available in the days to come.
