Smallhorn Canyon Ranch is a spectacular hunting ranch for sale and summer grazing operation tucked away in the Blacktail Mountains less than 15 miles south of Dillon, Montana. This Montana ranch lies at the end of the road and is surrounded by thousands of acres of BLM and State of Montana land, offering access to miles of riding, hunting, and outdoor recreation. The property is teeming with wildlife and boasts stunning mountain scenery, rolling grass pastures and heavily timbered ridges.
The ranch is currently unencumbered and boasts 24 separately deeded parcels. For a buyer interested in preservation, Smallhorn is a terrific candidate for conservation easement.
Wildlife and Hunting
Smallhorn Canyon Ranch hosts some of the best hunting opportunities found in southwestern Montana. The mountains and plains comprising the region harbor all the recognized big game species in Montana, including elk, whitetail and mule deer, antelope, black and grizzly bear, mountain lion, moose, Bighorn sheep and Rocky Mountain goats. Waterfowl and upland wing shooting are also superb in this area with the possibility of decoying ducks and geese in the morning, and then hunting for Hungarian partridge and grouse in the afternoon. Smallhorn Canyon is located in Montana’s Hunting District 325 and offers excellent opportunities for mule and whitetail deer, elk, black bear, wolf, and moose. The best whitetail hunting is early in the season, and the larger mule deer bucks show up on the property as the rut commences in November. Elk and black bear can be seen at any time during the season. From June through November, the ranch is a gathering place for over a thousand head of elk. Both moose and antelope tags are only available through a special draw process. Blue and ruffed grouse are also found on the ranch. The Lower Beaverhead Valley, north of Dillon, Montana is one of the finest waterfowl areas in America, and pheasant, Hungarian partridge, and sage grouse are found with regularity in this area.
